Retention Cohorts

We automatically create and maintain several key cohorts in PostHog for retention analysis:

D7 Retention Cohort

Users who return within 7 days of their first activity. This cohort helps identify early engagement patterns and predicts long-term user retention.

D30 Retention Cohort

Users who return within 30 days of their first activity. This cohort provides insight into sustained engagement and product stickiness.

Onboarding Completion Cohort

Users who successfully complete the onboarding process. This cohort helps track the effectiveness of onboarding improvements.

High Engagement Users Cohort

Users with high engagement patterns (5+ sessions in 7 days). This cohort identifies power users and potential advocates.

Correlation Analysis

We perform correlation analysis to identify factors that influence key user outcomes:

Onboarding Completion Factors

Analysis of what influences successful onboarding completion, including:

  • Signup source effectiveness
  • Device and browser compatibility
  • Marketing campaign performance
  • Time to complete onboarding
  • Steps completed
  • Help articles viewed

Feature Adoption Correlations

Analysis of what drives feature adoption, including:

  • User plan tier
  • Account age and experience

Churn Risk Indicators

  • Days since last activity

Using Retention & Correlation Data

In PostHog

Retention and correlation data is available directly in your PostHog dashboard:

  1. Navigate to the “Cohorts” section to view retention cohorts
  2. Use the “Insights” section to create retention charts
  3. Access correlation analysis through the “Correlation” tab

Interpreting Results

Correlation Coefficients

Correlation values range from -1 to 1:

  • 1.0 - Perfect positive correlation
  • 0.7-0.9 - Strong positive correlation
  • 0.3-0.7 - Moderate positive correlation
  • 0.1-0.3 - Weak positive correlation
  • 0.0 - No correlation
  • -0.1 to -0.3 - Weak negative correlation
  • -0.3 to -0.7 - Moderate negative correlation
  • -0.7 to -0.9 - Strong negative correlation
  • -1.0 - Perfect negative correlation

Actionable Insights

Focus on correlations with:

  1. High absolute values (≥ 0.3)
  2. Statistically significant sample sizes
  3. Logical causal relationships
  4. Actionable intervention opportunities
